🇩🇪 German Diaries #3 | Beyond the Brochure🏰 Schwerin Castle – Germany’s Newest UNESCO World Heritage Site

One of the greatest rewards of living in Germany is discovering history—not just reading about it.

Last Sunday, my son Aiman and I visited Schwerin Castle, in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where he now lives and works.

What makes this visit even more special is that the Schwerin Residence Ensemble was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. 🌍✨

Walking through its gardens, courtyards and historic paths reminded me that studying or working abroad is about much more than earning a degree or building a career. It is also about experiencing cultures, architecture and history that have shaped Europe for centuries.

Many Malaysians think of Germany only as Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt. Yet some of its most remarkable places are found in smaller cities—waiting to be discovered.

This is why I call this series “Beyond the Brochure.”

Sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned outside the classroom. 📚

And sometimes, the best conversations happen while walking through history with someone you love. ❤️

Have you ever visited a place that completely exceeded your expectations?
