Do We Fail as Parents — Or Did Nobody Tell Us This?

Over the years, working with students and parents, I have seen something that makes me genuinely sad.

Sometimes, we as parents can become the biggest limitation to our children’s opportunities.

Not because we don’t love them.

Precisely because we love them.

I have seen parents hesitate to invest in their children’s education because of financial concerns — sometimes very real, sometimes less so.

Some wait for subsidies even when they could afford to contribute.

Some say:

“I have three or four children. I cannot spend so much on one, even though he is the eldest”

Some worry:

“It is too far. What if something happens? How fast can i reach her?”

Some simply don’t believe their child is ready.

And sometimes, I wonder:

Are we protecting our children — or protecting ourselves from having to let them go?

Because stepping outside the comfort zone can be uncomfortable.

But it can also be transformative.

🌍 Living in another country
🗣️ Learning another language
🎓 Experiencing a different education system
🤝 Meeting people from different cultures
🧭 Learning to navigate life independently
💡 Discovering capabilities that perhaps even the child didn’t know they had

These experiences can build something that cannot easily be taught in a classroom:

Independence.

Of course, sending a young person abroad involves sacrifice.

Financial sacrifice.

Emotional sacrifice.

And sometimes, a little parental anxiety.

But perhaps that is part of parenting too.

Our responsibility is not only to protect our children from the world.

It is also to prepare them to face the world without us.

Sometimes we need to stretch ourselves as parents so that our children can stretch themselves as individuals.

Because ultimately:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I have seen young people leave Malaysia unsure of themselves and return with confidence, maturity and a much broader view of the world.

And sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t in the child.

It happens in the parents who finally learned to let go.

So – what kind of a parent are you?
